Animation Nation: A Cartoon Writing Workshop - Overview

Animation Nation: Being a Professional Cartoon Screenwriter

A Four Part Workshop Series

(Click here for an updated schedule)

Canada is a world leader in animated television series, but there has never been a workshop that deals with writing animation… so I decided to start one.

Here’s everything you need to know to write awesome cartoon scripts, and get paid for it! Working as a full time animation writer has its unique challenges. This course is designed to introduce to you the skills, techniques and standards that will help you land that first gig, and keep you sane as the deadlines pile up. We’ll talk about things like…

What’s the difference between an 11 minute show and a half hour? What are the different ages to write for, and what do they mean? What the heck is “Boy’s Action,” exactly? How do you work with a story editor, and how do you get “Broadcaster Approved?” How do you find an agent, and what won’t they do for you? How do you get that first gig? How do you run yourself like a small business?

Essentially, all the things I wish someone had told me before I got started, but I have had to figure out on my own.

Workshops will begin in late April, and there are two streams, the intensive stream that is four evenings in a row, and the regular stream which is one evening a week for four weeks.

The price is $250 for the four evenings, with a maximum of 6 people per workshop stream.

Attendees will also receive the following added bonuses to help jumpstart their careers;

Discounts on industry standard screenplay software, Final Draft and Movie Magic (you can’t work professionally without at least one of these.)

Have your animation samples read by Amy Stulberg, Talent Agent of Vanguarde Artists Management.

This workshop is being run by Scott Albert, a multi-talented writer and producer who has written dozens of animation episodes for many series, including Captain Flamingo, Gerald McBoing Boing and Jimmy Two Shoes. Scott has taught writing for LIFT, the Toronto film co-op, for Youth Programs (including the Art Gallery of Ontario) and his own workshops for TV series writing and short film writing. He is co-owner of the multi-platform production company GopherX.net, and his short form series Team Leader is currently being seen around the globe. His latest madness, the animation short form series Robot Roommates, is currently in production.
